Sergeant Stanley Evans raised his arm in the blackness. A faint luminous blur appeared. He brought his wrist closer, and focused his eyes: 0520. Just ten more minutes of sleep. Damn! The light-green glow disappeared as his arm fell to his chest. A part of his mind demanded the security of more blissful sleep, but already thoughts and visions were crowding his awakening brain.
The sounds of his men sleeping and the crickets chirping became louder, more distinct. The sergeant pulled back his warm poncho liner and stared at the corrugated steel ceiling.
A convoy … of all the damn luck.… At least he would see some more of the country. It would be just another day, a day like yesterday and the day before that and … no that wasn’t true. Evans smiled. Yesterday was not like other days, it had been special. He chuckled remembering how his men had run naked into the inviting blue South China Sea. They had such a good time yesterday, laughing, playing and joking. They had acted like small boys for a whole wonderful day.
He could still see Elk’s awe-struck face as the thin soldier turned toward him in the chest deep water. “Wo-Wo Women!” he stuttered excitedly. Two nurses wearing fatigues and carrying large bags had walked from behind a sand dune and now sauntered down the beach. The nurses stopped ten yards from the water’s edge and began undressing in front of the staring men.
Amos and Chico hunkered down in the shallow water; both were non-swimmers, afraid to venture deeper. When the first nurse began unbuttoning her fatigue shirt, Amos crouched even lower, his eyes glued to the disrobing women. A wave temporarily engulfed him. Evans got ready to rescue the man, but to his surprise Amos didn’t miss a button. He emerged spluttering, but fixed his eyes on the women again. Not a man moved a muscle or an eyelash. All were afraid any movement might stop the unbelievable event unfolding before them. Real Women! Round Eyes! The Nurses calmly chattered to each other, apparently used to the presence of men at this beach.
The men were not disappointed when it became obvious that the nurses wore bathing suits under their uniforms. A woman undressing, exposing bare shoulders, legs, thighs, was more than enough for men who hadn’t seen such an erotic unfolding since home.
The nurses spread their blankets, turned their radio on, and sensually oiled their bodies. Then the men’s predicament sank in.
“Wha-wha-what we gon-gon-gonna do, Sa-Sa-Sarge?” asked Elk.
“How we gonna get our clothes, Ev?” asked Bull.
Howdy Doody, named for his uncanny resemblance to the famous puppet, added, “Yeah Ev, how we gettin’ out of here?”
The team sergeant studied his men’s anxious faces. They were genuinely worried, pleading for direction. Elk wrapped his arms around his chest.
“Wha-wha-what ever we-we d-d-do, hu-hu-hurry I’m c-c-cold.”
“No sweat guys, I’ll just talk to ’em.” The worried men heard their Sergeant’s confidence and relaxed a little. He waded in closer.
“Hey Ladies … Ladies!” One of the nurses turned down the radio and looked at the yelling soldier in the waist-deep water.
